Texas Gulf Coast Weekend Sail — Galveston to Port Aransas in 48 Hours
One of the best sailing weekends in Texas doesn't require a week off work. Here's how to do the upper coast — Galveston Bay to Port Aransas — in a single weekend, with time left over for a dockside beer.
Day 1: Galveston to Matagorda (Saturday)
Depart Galveston Yacht Basin at first light (about 0600 in summer). Head southwest down the Galveston Channel, then pick up the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GIWW) heading toward Freeport.
The GIWW is well-marked the whole way. Keep an eye on depth soundings — some stretches run shallow, especially near San Luis Pass. Stay in the channel and you're fine.
Lunch stop: Freeport/Surfside. Tie up at Bridge Harbor Yacht Club (call ahead for transient slips — (979) 233-2101). Grab a burger at the marina restaurant, fuel up, and push on.
Anchor for the night: East Matagorda Bay. Drop the hook near the Matagorda Peninsula. You're protected from the Gulf swell, and the sunset over the marsh is worth every mile. Total day: ~70 nautical miles, 10–12 hours.
Day 2: Matagorda to Port Aransas (Sunday)
Weigh anchor at 0700. Continue the GIWW southwest past Port O'Connor, across San Antonio Bay, and into the Aransas Bay system. This stretch goes fast — the wind tends to be at your back, and the channel is wider.
Midday: Aransas Bay opens up. If you've got time to kill, tack out into the bay and enjoy the open water. The Lydia Ann Lighthouse (built 1857) is your landmark for the Port Aransas approach.
Arrive Port Aransas: early afternoon. Dock at Island Moorings Marina or the Port Aransas Municipal Marina. You're done. Walk to Virginia's On the Bay for a cold beer and fresh seafood while you watch the ferries shuttle back and forth across the channel.
Quick Tips
- Draft matters: If your boat draws more than 5 feet, check the latest GIWW depth notices. Some sections shoal after storms.
- Barge traffic: Tugs pushing barges have right of way and don't slow down. Pass on the one-whistle side. Monitor Channel 13.
- Fuel: Top off in Freeport. The next reliable fuel is Port O'Connor.
- Bug spray: Bring it. Matagorda mosquitoes are enthusiastic.
What to Wear
Two days of Gulf Coast sailing calls for breathable layers. A Sail TX cotton tee as your base, a sun hoodie for the midday grind, and a windbreaker stashed in the cockpit. Our full Galveston packing list has the complete rundown.
